I only have experience as a parent in the middle school. The big up sides are that it's a small middle school (about 60 kids per grade) so the kids get a lot of personal attention, the teachers are engaged and creative about teaching their subjects, and communication with both admin and teachers is super fluid. The smaller down sides are the English department in the middle school, which may be good for ESL kids but is weak for native English speakers and also the relatively low level of Spanish and Catalan instruction for non-native speakers as compared to other international schools in Barcelona (French school, German school, etc.). Catalan isn't taught at BFIS unless you already speak it. Maybe that's fine for many, but not even having it as an option seems odd to me. Spanish is taught seriously to native speakers and they get History and Geography in Spanish as well, but for non-natives, Spanish is taught only as a foreign language. The teachers are good, but progress is slow. That may be in part because the social groups are very segregated at BFIS, at least in the middle school. The Spanish kids mostly stick together so the non-Spanish speakers don't hear much Spanish at all during the school day (lunch period, recess, etc). I know a number of kids who've been living in Spain for 1-2 years, attend BFIS, and still don't speak much Spanish at all. That may be fine for some families who just want a pure English langauge education, but for us, it's been a disappointment.

This is by far the best international school in BCN. Strong points are: Very well balanced classes for mixing international and local families, your kid will learn English first for sure. The community is very strong and engaging. Facilities are decent and teachers are excellent.
